This event will take you back to the era of phonographs, the 19th century era that not just marked the advent of gramophone companies in India but also gave the women singers or the `gaanewalis' of the time, a unique chance to enjoy recording their melodious singing on gramophones.
’Women on Record', a one of its kind musical event, celebrating the music of women in early 20th century in India is being host in the city, to the delight of those fascinated by the music of the period.
Being organized by the Mysore Music Association and Centre for Media and Alternative Communication (CMAC), New Delhi, at the Jagan Mohan Palace auditorium on Saturday, the event includes a multi-media performance that celebrates the music of women who sang during the time.
Said Vidya Shah, singer and director of the project `Women on Record', said the event is a tribute to women like Gauhar Jan and Zohrabai, who sang in the era of the gramophone record in India. This multi-media performance, including a vocal concert and installations of moving images, brings alive the world of music. It is all about the music of those women who are almost lost in public memory but played a significant role in the world of music, recording for the gramophone companies for the first time. "Women of this era made a significant contribution to Indian art, music, literature and were involved in theatre and film. They have had a profound influence on subsequent performance music. The vocalists took on the challenge presented by this new technology of presenting their work in approximately three minutes, this given the innately improvisatory nature of Indian music, Vidya added.
The event includes a scripted performance with narration, visuals and a concert to take the audience through the time and the challenges of women singers as well as their sense of enterprise including the diverse repertoire they brought into India music. It brings back the histories of these women artistes in a more contemporary interpretation. Vidya Shah will present the vocal recital. The script is by Vidya Shah and Naresh Kumar while Prithvi Shah is the creative director of the programme which commences at the venue at 6.30 pm on the day.
